We knew it was a hit the first time we savoured the tender prosciutto, creamy Gorgonzola and fresh arugula - all on a pizza called The Miki from a posh bistro called Pizzeria Gusto. Apparently we weren't alone. The editors of Where Magazine crowned it as one of Canada's best new restaurants for 2008.

Nothing warms a winter soul like fabulous food. And what could be more soulful than southern-style barbecue? Just like deciding whether Elvis or Johnny Cash is your favourite, you'll be torn between saucy, tender pulled pork and crispy-edged, sweet-hot ribs at Lovey's BBQ and Smokehouse. Roll out the napkins!

Sweeter tastes will stand perplexed at the offerings in the display cases at Chocolatier Constance Popp. Hand-made bonbons carry the traditions of international craftsmanship with the innovative twist of local ingredients like Manitoba honey, beets and maple syrup. A marriage made in culinary heaven.

How can a 16-seat lunch counter at the base of a parkade become so popular? Don't bother asking the diners at the Kraut King. They'll be too busy chowing down on a juicy Oktoberfest burger (with that mysterious but delicious red sauce), roasted potatoes and the most authentic sauerkraut in the city.

Feeling nostalgic? Lilac Bakery has revisited the obscure but sinful red velvet cake - this time in a cupcake version complete with a cloud of sweet cream cheese frosting on top. The classics continue with New York slice, date squares and carrot cake, just like Mom used to make (even if Mom never made them).

The jury is still out on whether Winnipeg has the highest number of restaurants per capita in the world but suffice it to say that there are plenty. Whether you're craving fish and chips or a Vietnamese bowl topped with cilantro, this city has it. Just can't decide? Dine About Winnipeg can help. For 10 gloriously gastronomic days in February, more than two dozen restaurants offer an appetizer, entrée and dessert for a fixed price (most of them $25). It's a chance to check out those places you always meant to check out - and at a legendary Winnipeg Deal price. Even if you miss this February extravaganza, prices aren't that much higher through the rest of the year, so get adventurous and add a few new favourites to your list.
